Toledo, Ohio — The Toledo baseball team opened its series with Central Michigan on Friday and came away with a 4-3 comeback win. The game was played at Mercy Field due to the weather.

Trailing by one entering the bottom of the eighth, the Rockets manufactured two runs to take a late lead and secure their fourth straight win. Freshman Ryan Thompson drove in the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to left field, one of his two RBIs on the day. Sophomore John Servello went 3-for-3 and senior Brad Boss went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored.

Freshman Darryn Davis was instrumental in Toledo's offensive attack, despite not recording an official at-bat. Davis will go down with an 0-for-0 performance in the box score, but he tied an NCAA Division I single-game record with four sacrifice bunts, the fifth player to ever reach that milestone. His fourth sac bunt of the game set up UT's tying and go-ahead runs.

Junior Doug Smith provided Toledo with seven solid innings, allowing six hits but no walks and striking out two. Senior Nate Haugh ended the game with two scoreless frame and three strikeouts.

How it Happened

Central Michigan scored all of its runs in the top of the third. After the leadoff man was hit by a pitch, a Toledo throwing error on an attempted sacrifice bunt left CMU with runners on first and second with no outs. Two runs scored on a double to right field, and a single into the gap in right-center brought home the third Chippewa run.
The Rockets got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Boss walked to lead off the inning, Servello singled up the middle, then they both advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Davis. Thompson then hustled out an infield single that allowed Boss to score and made the scoreboard read 3-1.
Boss led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, then scored on a CMU error to make the score 3-2.
Toledo escaped trouble in the top of the seventh and eighth. Smith worked his way out of a two-on, no-out jam in the seventh and Haugh maneuvered his way out of a bases-loaded jam with one out.
The Rockets scored two in the eighth to secure their fourth straight win. Boss once again led off the inning with a double, then Servello walked and both moved up a base on a sac bunt by Davis. Boss scored on a passed ball, then Thompson drove in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to left field.
