Toledo, Belmont Split Doubleheader

Nashville, Tenn.— After two rainy days in Nashville, the Toledo baseball team was finally able to get back on the diamond on Sunday. The Rockets split a doubleheader with Belmont, winning game one, 10-7, before dropping an abbreviated game two, 5-2.

After having games rained out on Friday and Saturday, Toledo was able to play two against the Bruins on Sunday. A nine-inning game was followed by a seven-inning game at E.S. Rose Park.

The Rockets are now 3-3 on the season. Next up is their spring break trip, with games scheduled against Davidson, UNC-Wilmington, and Bucknell.

Game One: Toledo 10, Belmont 7

The Rockets and Bruins combined for just two runs in the first six innings, both coming in the top of the third. The final four frames were offensively loaded though, featuring 15 runs. Senior Brad Boss led the team with three hits and scored twice, and sophomore Zach Schwartzenberger led all comers with three RBIs during his 2-for-3 effort. Freshman Thomas Eitniear reached base three times in four at-bats and came around to score each time. Sophomore Trace Hatfield drove in two runs to help lead UT to the win.

Senior Michael Jacob threw seven innings, striking out four and allowing two runs. Seniors Jake Stout and Nate Haugh, as well as junior Austin Calopietro, all pitched for Toledo.

How it Happened
  • Belmont had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the first, but Jacob rolled a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning.
  • Boss had the defensive play of the game in the bottom of the second, recording the first out of the inning with a tremendous diving catch in deep center field.
  • UT struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the third to take a 2-0 lead. Servello's two-out double brought home Eitniear to plate the game's first run, then Boss scored on a wild pitch in the next at-bat.
  • Facing bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the fifth, Jacob once again got out of trouble by forcing the Bruins to ground into an inning-ending double play.
  • Servello scored on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth to extend UT's lead to 3-0, and Schwartzenberger's RBI single made it 4-0.
  • The Rockets' biggest inning of the day was the seventh, during which they scored four runs to take an 8-0 lead. Two bases-loaded walks preceded a two-run single from Schwartzenberger to give the Midnight Blue and Gold a commanding eight-run lead.
  • UT added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth to bring its total to 10.
  • After plating two runs each in the seventh and eighth innings, Belmont nearly came all the way back in the bottom of the ninth. The Bruins scored three to make it 10-7 and had the tying run at the plate, but Toledo held on to win game one.

Game Two: Belmont 5, Toledo 2 (7 innings)

Due to the many schedule changes both teams faced this weekend, UT and Belmont wrapped up Sunday's doubleheader with a seven-inning contest. The teams traded leads until the bottom of the fifth, when the Bruins scored twice to take a 4-2 advantage. An insurance run in the sixth gave Belmont a 5-2 victory.

Both squads combined for just eight hits, with Servello, Hatfield, and freshman Darryn Davis accounting for the Rockets' tallies. Meyers and Davis drove in the runs for UT, while junior Layne Schnitz-Paxton, senior Axel Bueter, and junior Doug Smith saw action on the mound.

How it Happened
  • Belmont was the first to score in the abbreviated game two, putting one run on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI double.
  • Davis ripped a double down the right field line that scored Hatfield in the top of the second to knot the score at 1-1.
  • The Bruins re-took the lead on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third.
  • The Rockets created a run in the top of the fifth with some expert baserunning. Boss scored on a ground ball to first base to tie the game at 2-2. The Bruins tried to turn the double play, but Boss kept running and scored when Servello beat out the throw at first.
  • Belmont scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, taking its biggest lead of the day to that point after a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring base hit through the right side. The Bruins added another run in the sixth to make it 5-2.
