Davidson, N.C.— The Toledo baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader at Davidson, winning game one by a score of 13-5 before falling in the nightcap, 11-5.
The two squads were rained out on Friday, so the Rockets and Wildcats began their series with a Saturday twin bill. The Midnight Blue and Gold dominated for much of the first game, while Davidson controlled game two.
The time for Sunday's series finale has been changed. The Rockets and Wildcats will square off at 11:00 a.m. at Wilson Field.
Game One: Toledo 13, Davidson 5
The first game of the twin bill was all Rockets from the start. UT led, 10-0, through three innings, and starting pitcher
Michael Jacob was sensational. The senior southpaw threw seven scoreless innings, striking out a career-high 13 batters and allowing just two hits and two walks. At the plate, sophomore
John Servello went 4-for-5 with a career-high six RBIs, including a grand slam in the third inning. Freshman
Darryn Davis tallied three hits, and sophomore
Chris Meyers drove in two runs and had a solo home run.
How it Happened
- Toledo struck first, scoring a run in the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead. Davis singled to right field and Servello scored from second.
- The Rockets scored twice in the second, courtesy of an RBI single from Servello and a sacrifice fly from Meyers.
- The bats exploded for seven runs in the top of the third to take a 10-0 lead. Senior Riley Campbell led off the scoring with a two-run double, and then Servello followed that up with a grand slam to left field. Meyers launched a solo shot to right to go back-to-back and cap an exciting third inning.
- Jacob was outstanding, and did not allow his first hit until the fifth inning.
- Davis was hit by a pitch in the top of the fourth with the bases loaded to make it 11-0.
- Freshman Ryan Thompson's RBI single and Servello's RBI double added to the Rockets' run total and put them ahead 13-0 in the top of the ninth.
- Davidson had a successful ninth inning, but it was too little too late. The Wildcats scored five runs, including back-to-back homers, but the Rockets still came away with the win.

Game Two: Davidson 11, Toledo 5
Like in game one, UT was able to take an early lead over Davidson, but this time the lead did not last long. The Wildcats pushed across three runs in the third, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth to build an insurmountable lead over the Midnight Blue and Gold. Davis, senior
Brad Boss, and sophomore TraceHatfield all tallied two hits to lead the offense.
How it Happened
- Toledo struck first once again, taking a 1-0 lead after Davis's RBI double in the top of the second.
- Davidson took its first lead of the day in the bottom half of the second. A bases-clearing double put the Rockets in a 3-1 hole.
- Two more runs came across in the bottom of the fifth for the Wildcats. The first one came on a fielder's choice to first base; the runner at second came around to score on the grounder after Hatfield's throw home was just late. An RBI single then made it 5-1.
- A two-run home run and an RBI bunt gave Davidson three more runs and put Toledo behind, 8-1, in the sixth inning.
- The Rockets had a great seventh inning, scoring four runs to pull within three. Four straight RBI hits made the score 8-5: doubles from Thompson, freshman Mark Mohnickey, and Boss and then a single by Servello brought the runs home for UT.
- Davidson doubled its lead in the bottom half of the seventh. A solo shot to right field and two bases-loaded walks put the score at 11-5.
