Toledo Heading to West Virginia for Sunday Matinee at Marshall

SETTING THE SCENE
        The Toledo men's basketball team (0-1) plays its second-straight road game to open the 2019-20 campaign when it travels to Huntington, W. Va. on Sunday, Nov. 10 to battle Conference USA opponent Marshall (1-0). The contest will tip off at 2:00 p.m. in the Cam Henderson Center and be televised on ESPN3.
        Sunday's game is Toledo's first as part of the Men Against Breast Cancer Invitational presented by FieldTurf. The Rockets will also host Robert Morris (Nov. 16) and Howard (Nov. 17) and travel to Notre Dame (Nov. 21) during the tournament.
        The Rockets are looking to rebound from Tuesday's season-opening 79-77 setback at Valparaiso. Junior Marreon Jackson tallied a career-high 27 points and seven assists for Toledo with redshirt freshman Keshaun Saunders scoring 18 points in his collegiate debut.
        The Rockets led by as many as 14 points in the first half before falling behind by nine points in the second half. UT trailed 75-68 with 1:06 remaining but rallied to tie the score at 77-77 on a pair of Jackson free throws with 13 seconds left. Valpo answered with the game-winning shot with four seconds to play.
        Marshall opened its season Thursday night with a 67-60 home win over Robert Morris. Junior Jarrod West scored a team-high 20 points to lead a trio of Thundering Herd players in double digits. MU led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but the Colonials then held a lead for seven minutes in the second half. Marshall scored 11 of the game's final 13 points to secure the win.

   Toledo leads 34-23. The Rockets snapped a two-game losing skid vs. Marshall with a 75-74 (OT) road win last year. Toledo's previous trip to Huntington resulted in a 111-105 (OT) defeat in 2016.
 
POST TOUCHES
•  Toledo's 48 victories over the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons are the most in a two-year period in Rocket history. The previous best was 47 from 2013-14 to 2014-15.
•  Toledo posted a 25-8 mark last year after registering a 23-11 ledger in 2017-18.
•  The Rockets have registered 13-5 league marks in each of the last two years and their 68 MAC victories over the last six seasons rank second in the league.
•  Toledo also ranks second in the MAC with 129 wins over the last six seasons.
•  Junior Marreon Jackson was named to the Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch list this week. The award is presented to the top mid-major player in the nation.
•  Willie Jackson is the MAC's top returning rebounder after ranking fourth last year with 8.9 rpg. He registered nine double-doubles last year and led or shared the team lead in rebounding on 21 occasions. Jackson led the Rockets with a game-high 12 rebounds in their season opener at Valparaiso (Nov. 5).
•  Marreon Jackson ranked fourth in the MAC last year with 4.3 apg and seventh with 1.5 spg. He ranked second on the team with 13.5 ppg in MAC play and ranked third in the MAC in league games only with a 40.0 3PTFG% (42-of-105).
•  Jackson was 9-of-15 from the field, 3-of-9 from three-point range and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line at Valpo. Redshirt freshman Keshaun Saunders also shot 60.0% from the field and was 4-of-7 from three-point range.
•  Luke Knapke finished third in the MAC in league play with 1.7 bpg and ranked fourth with a 59.4 FG% Knapke moved into second place on Toledo's all-time blocked shot list with three rejections on Tuesday. He now has 139 career blocks, one ahead of J.C. Harris (1989-92) and 16 behind Nathan Boothe (2012-16). He also needs just 43 points to become the 47th Rocket to score 1,000 career points.
•  Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk is in his 10th season at the Rockets' helm and has guided Toledo to four 20-win campaigns in the last six years, marking the first time for this accomplishment since Bob Nichols recorded five straight 20-win seasons from 1976-81.
•  The Rockets' 25 victories last year ranked second in school history. Toledo won a school-record 27 games under Coach Kowalczyk in the 2013-14 campaign.

ON THE HORIZON
                Toledo will continue play in the Men Against Breast Cancer Invitational presented by FieldTurf when it hosts Robert Morris and Howard on Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 16-17. Toledo will close out the MABC with a trip to South Bend, Ind. to face Notre Dame on Thursday, Nov. 21.
