Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo women's soccer team (2-1-1) will play its home-opener match against IUPUI (1-3-0) this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Scott Park. The Rockets will also celebrate their eight seniors as part of senior day. In conjunction with Rocket Week and Toledo football's home opener against VMI, fans who present their football game ticket at the ticket booth will receive free admission to the match as well. Fans who wear midnight blue and gold gear will also receive one dollar off admission.
The Rockets' eight seniors include: captains
Hannah Scafaria,
Regan Price and
Alena Sidwell, along with
Natalie Knauf,
Jamie Peters,
Shelby Gillespie,
Kelsey Kraft and
Katie Wilson.
Sunday will also feature a pre-game recognition of the 2017 Mid-American Conference championship team and their MAC trophy. Additionally, fans in attendance will walk away with free UT athletics pocket schedules and a special poster commemorating the 2017 MAC championship squad. One hundred Toledo women's soccer t-shirts will also be handed out.
Sunday is also the first Soccer Mom Sunday of the season. Every mom whose kids attends the game dressed in their soccer uniform will receive free admission to the match.
Last Time out
The Rockets are coming off weekend matches against Valparaiso and UIC. UT shut out the Crusaders 2-0 on Friday to earn the first win of the 2018 season, then followed with a 6-1 stomping of UIC on Sunday.
Toledo's goals against Valpo came from junior
Abby Demboski and sophomore
Alex Troy, each of whom recorded their first goals of the season. Demboski's point came early into the second half following Scafaria getting fouled inside the penalty box. Demboski stepped up to the dot and calmly took the penalty to put Toledo up 1-0. Troy's chance came with 17 minutes left in the contest. The redshirt sophomore found space in the left side of the 18-yard box and slotted a shot to the right of Crusader's goalie Kezia Gesell to make it 2-0 Toledo.
Sunday featured Scafaria scoring a hat trick and three Rockets registering their first goals of the season. Scafaria opened with back-to-back points in the opening 15 minutes, followed by freshman
Sophia Lewis slotting one in in the 18th minute to put Toledo up 3-0. UIC's Tamae Douglas got on the board in the 25th minute off a header in close to sophomore goalie
Madison Perrin that made things 3-1. Kraft then scored for Toledo in the 32nd minute to close out the half. Scafaira kept the heat coming early into the second half thanks to a 55th minute point, and freshman
Tatiana Woodworth rounded out the match with a 70th minute point.
Scouting the Rockets
Scafaria has started off the 2018 campaign hot, quickly registering five goals through four matches. The captain leads the team with 10 points, and 11 of her 15 shots have been on frame. Kraft has also been contributing to the offense and has the second-most points on the team (four), recording one goal and two assists on the year. In net, Perrin has stood tall for the Rockets. The sophomore has allowed four goals, made 15 saves, and holds a .789 save percentage with one shutout through her four matches.
Last time against IUPUI
Sunday's match is the first time the Rockets and Jaguars have played since Nov. 1, 1998. The Rockets won 6-0 that day.
Scouting the Panthers
The Jaguars are coming off a 3-1 loss to Eastern Kentucky on Sunday. IUPUI conceded a goal in the fifth but kept the ball out of their net for the remainder of the first half. The Colonels scored their second point in the 56th minute, but the Jaguars responded a minute later thanks to sophomore Miranda Ricks bending one into the left upper 90. EKU's final point of the match came in the 60th minute.
IUPUI's offense has been led by Ricks, senior Braegan Lyon and sophomore Jessi Cowen, each of whom have one goal on the year. In net for the Jaguars is junior Sophia Lipka who's played through all four of IUPUI's matches. Lipka has allowed eight goals, made 24 saves, and has a 2.00 GAA and .750 save percentage with one shutout.
