Toledo, Ohio— The Toledo baseball team fell to Youngstown State on Tuesday, 17-16, in a high-scoring affair at Scott Park.
Despite allowing 17 runs to the Penguins, the Rockets were in the game until the final out. Trailing 17-11 entering the bottom of the ninth, UT scored five runs in its last trip to the plate to pull within one. Ultimately, the deficit was too much to overcome and Toledo ended up on the losing end of Tuesday's game.
Seven Rockets had at least two hits against Youngstown State. Senior
Brad Boss, freshman
Trace Hatfield, and senior
AJ Montoya all had a similar line: 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Junior
Ross Adolph hit his 13th home run of the season in the bottom of the ninth to pull his team within one. His 13 homers are tied for fifth-most in a single season in Toledo history. Adolph, Boss, Hatfield, and freshman
John Servello all drove in three runs.
Next up for the Rockets is a Wednesday contest at Butler. That game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
How it Happened
- The game started with a bang. Youngstown State's Trey Bridis launched a long leadoff home run to give the Penguins an early lead. An RBI single put Toledo in a 2-0 hole before it had a chance to bat.
- Youngstown State took a 3-0 lead with an RBI base hit in the top of the second.
- The lead didn't last long as the Rockets scored five in the bottom of the second. Hatfield Servello, and senior Corey Tipton all tallied run-scoring hits, while Meyers drove in Hatfield with a sacrifice fly.
- Toledo scored two runs each in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Boss recorded a run-scoring double and triple, and Adolph, Hatfield, and Servello all drove in runs during that stretch.
- The Penguins did most of their damage in the final four innings. They scored twice in the top of the sixth, seven runs in the seventh, and five in the eighth to dramatically swing the pendulum in their favor.
- The seventh inning offensive barrage started with an RBI single and was followed by a UT fielding miscue that allowed two runs. Another RBI single preceded a three-run home run from Lucas Nasonti that concluded the seven-run inning.
- Two big swings blew the game open in the eighth inning for the Penguins. Nick LaBrasca's bases-loaded double cleared the bags for three runs, and Bridis smacked his second homer of the day, putting Toledo behind by a score of 17-11.
- Facing a six-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth, Hatfield led off with a double and advanced to third on Montoya's single. Meyers drove in his fellow freshman for the first run of the inning, then sophomore Michael Ryan was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior Matt Hansen and Servello both recorded an out, but drove in runs in the process to make the score 17-14.
- Adolph stepped to the plate and drove the first pitch he saw well over the fence in right center field to pull Toledo within one, 17-16. The comeback stopped there, though, leaving the Rockets a run short.
