Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo men's tennis team fell 4-3 to Binghamton today in the penultimate match of the Mid-American Conference regular season. Toledo's points came from the doubles point and strong play from juniors
Vince Anzalone and
Juan Carranza.
"It was a tough loss but we saw some good things today," head coach
Al Wermer said. "Our normal doubles teams weren't intact but we still won the doubles point, Vince did a nice job in the singles, and I was really proud of the way Juan played in his singles match. Juan hasn't played singles since the fall, but when we threw him in there he did a really nice job."
The match started with Toledo claiming the doubles point. Senior
Stephen Miller and sophomore
Danilo Vukotic fell 6-2 in the No. 1 spot but UT rebounded in the next two matches. Anzalone and junior
Reid Teatsorth won 6-3 playing in No. 2, and the team of Carranza and junior
Serjen Olmedo won 6-3 in the No. 3 spot to wrap up doubles.
In singles, Anzalone and Carranza shined for UT. Playing No. 1, Anzalone swept his opponent 6-4, 6-3 to give Toledo a 2-0 lead. The Rockets fell one-by-one in all but one of the remaining singles matches. Playing in the No. 6 spot, Carranza dropped his first set 5-7 but rallied to a 7-6 (7) victory in the second to force a third go around. The Queretaro, Mexico native fought hard and ended his final set 6-1.
The Rockets return to action in the final match of the season tomorrow when Toledo hosts Western Michigan at 2 p.m. on the UT varsity tennis courts..
