Toledo Evens Series with Miami after 8-4 Victory

Oxford, Ohio— The Toledo baseball team has evened its weekend series with Miami after Saturday's 8-4 win.

The Rockets trailed, 3-1, entering the sixth inning, but scored seven runs in the final four frames to come out on top. Senior Brad Boss smacked a go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh inning to make it 6-4 and give Toledo the lead for good.

Offensively, every starter had a hit on Saturday. Junior Ross Adolph went 2-for-4 with a home run and a two-run triple, driving in three of the Rockets' runs. Freshman Chris Meyers had another two-hit day and scored two runs, while Boss brought in two runs on his clutch dinger.

Senior Sam Shutes started on the mound for UT and gave the Rockets six innings and eight strikeouts without allowing a walk. Sophomore Austin Calopietro was excellent out of the bullpen, pitching the final three innings and registering five strikeouts for the first save of his career.

Toledo and Miami will conclude this weekend's series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

How it Happened
  • Adolph led off the top of the second inning with a towering home run to right field on the first pitch he saw, giving the Rockets a 1-0 lead.
  • The RedHawks tied it up in the bottom of the second with a two-out, run scoring single through the left side of the infield. Shutes had recorded two strikeouts before the RBI hit, and proceeded to record the third out with a three-pitch strikeout.
  • Miami scored twice in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 run lead.
  • The Rockets scored three in the top of the sixth to reclaim the lead over the RedHawks. Adolph hustled out a triple that brought in two runs and, in the next at-bat, scored on senior Dalton Bollinger's single to make it 4-3. Freshmen Trace Hatfield and John Servello both scored on Adolph's double.
  • The RedHawks tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom half of the sixth. After allowing consecutive doubles to lead off the inning, Shutes struck out the next two batters. A two-out Toledo error allowed the tying run to score.
  • Meyers led off the seventh inning with a single, then reached third base on an error by the left fielder. With two outs in the inning, Boss launched a two-run homer to right field to give UT a 6-4 lead.
  • Gose added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, laying down a great bunt that allowed senior Corey Tipton to score from third. Meyers also scored on a wild pitch to put the Rockets ahead, 8-4.
