Oxford, Ohio— The Toledo baseball team fell to Miami in walk-off fashion on Sunday afternoon by a score of 7-6.
In a back-and-forth affair, Toledo scored twice in the top of the third to take an early lead. Miami answered right back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame to jump ahead, 3-2. The Rockets plated two runs each in the sixth and seventh to take a three-run lead, 6-3, before the RedHawks tied it up with three runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth.
The bottom of the ninth inning started with a hit by pitch, and the very next batter drove a double to deep left field, bringing in the winning run and handing the Rockets their second walk-off defeat in three days.
At the plate, senior
Brad Boss tallied two hits and drove in a run. Junior
Ross Adolph went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI triple, as well as two walks. Freshman
Trace Hatfield had a big two-run double in the seventh inning.
Freshman
Jacob Youngpeter started the game for Toledo, his second start in five days (3/28 at Ohio State). The rookie threw 2.1 scoreless innings against the RedHawks, striking out three. Senior
Alex Wagner was terrific, throwing 3.2 scoreless frames without allowing a walk.
Next up for Toledo is a Wednesday contest at Michigan at 4:00 p.m. Next weekend, the Rockets will host MAC foe Ohio for a three-game series, the first home games of the 2018 season.
How it Happened
- The Rockets struck first on Sunday, scoring twice in the top of the third. The first run came courtesy of a Miami error. UT had both runners moving, but the catcher's throw bounced off the third baseman's glove and allowed senior Casey Gose to score easily. The next pitch, Boss singled home freshman Chris Meyers to put Toledo ahead, 2-0.
- Miami didn't wait long to take the lead, scoring three times in the bottom half of the third. An RBI double into the left center field gap was followed by a run-scoring single to the opposite gap to tie the game at 2-2. A two-out liner to right field brought in the go-ahead run.
- Wagner came into the game in the bottom of the fourth and did a great job shutting down the RedHawks' bats. He ended his day throwing 3.2 scoreless innings and struck out two.
- UT took the lead again in the top of the sixth. Adolph beat the shift and ripped a double to the corner in left field, scoring freshman John Servello for the tying run. Senior Dalton Bollinger then drove in Adolph on a line drive single to left field, making the score 4-3.
- Hatfield did a terrific job waiting for his pitch in his seventh inning at-bat, and it paid off. After fouling off five straight pitches, he drove one into the gap for a two-run double to extend UT's lead to 6-3.
- Entering the game in the seventh inning with men on second and third and two outs, freshman Kyle Bischoff blew away the third out on three pitches for an easy strikeout.
- Miami tied the game at 6-6 in the eighth inning. A double hit very deep to left field scored the first run, followed by a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly, were the run-scoring plays for the RedHawks.
- For the second time this weekend, the Rockets suffered a walk-off defeat at the hands of Miami. A double to deep left field from Hayden Senger allowed Friday's hero Parker Massman to score all the way from first.
