Toledo Drops Series Opener at Miami, 8-7

Oxford, Ohio— The Toledo baseball team dropped its series opener to Miami on Friday night, 8-7. The Rockets were felled by a walk-off RBI single in the ninth inning.

Trailing for the entire game, UT stormed back to score five runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 7-6 lead. After three consecutive singles to lead off the frame, the Rockets' offense drove in runs in five straight at-bats to jump ahead of the RedHawks. In the bottom half of the inning, though, Miami tied the game at 7-7 and then Parker Massman's single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth drove in the game-winning run. The base hit handed Toledo an 8-7 loss and its fourth walk-off defeat of the season.

Freshman Chris Meyers was a perfect 4-for-4 in getting on base on Friday, with two singles and two walks. Junior Ross Adolph led the way with three RBIs while Meyers and Freshman John Servello both scored two runs apiece. Senior AJ Montoya drove in the tying run in the eighth and sophomore Michael Ryan brought in the go-ahead score.

Junior Michael Jacob started the game and went 3.2 innings on Friday evening. Junior Luke Schaefer, freshman Kyle Bischoff, and junior Nate Haugh all pitched out of the bullpen for the Rockets.

Saturday's game has been moved up to Noon, from 5:00 p.m., due to rain in the forecast.

How it Happened
  • The RedHawks scored twice in the bottom of the first, tallying runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single through the left side.
  • A two-run double to center field off the bat of Hayden Senger gave Miami a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
  • Meyers and Servello both drew walks in the top of the fourth inning, setting up Adolph's two-run double to right field. The hit put Toledo on the board and made the score 4-2.
  • Miami got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to go up 5-2.
  • Schaefer got the Rockets out of a small jam when he entered the game and ended up throwing 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit and one unearned run.
  • With runners on first and third, the RedHawks took advantage of a rundown between first and second, sending the runner on third home. The run would score before the Rockets had a chance to tag out the runner at first, making the score 6-2.
  • Toledo took the lead for the first time in the top of the eighth. Five runs from the Midnight Blue & Gold put them ahead, 7-6. After leading off the inning with three straight singles, UT scored its runs on a bases loaded walk, RBI singles from freshman Trace Hatfield and Montoya, a sac fly from senior Dalton Bollinger, and a fielder's choice from Ryan. Montoya's laser to left center field brought in the tying run.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Miami took advantage of a leadoff triple to tie the game at 7-7.
  • Toledo had chances in the top of the ninth, Meyers and senior Brad Boss led off the inning with consecutive walks, but the Rockets were unable to capitalize.
  • The RedHawks walked off in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single to center field to win, 8-7.
