Toledo Drops Series Finale at Cincinnati, 9-8

Cincinnati, Ohio— The Toledo baseball team dropped its series finale at Cincinnati on Sunday by a score of 9-8.

The Rockets ran into trouble in the bottom of the first inning, allowing four runs despite not allowing a hit. UT took the lead after a six-run fourth inning, but relinquished its advantage in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Ross Adolph, who had two home runs on Sunday, tied it up at 8-8 with his second dinger of the day in the seventh inning. Cincinnati wouldn't stay down for long, though, and scored the eventual winning run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double.

Adolph's two home runs led the way offensively for Toledo. Also having a good day at the plate was freshman John Servello, who tied a career-high with three hits for the second straight game. Sophomore Michael Ryan knocked recorded two hits as well for the second straight day.

Toledo's pitchers had a tough day on Sunday, issuing 15 walks to UC batters.

Next up for Toledo is its home opener against Youngstown State this Wednesday at 3:05 p.m. Following that game, the Rockets head to Kalamazoo for their first MAC series of the season, a three-game set with Western Michigan from March 23-25.

How it Happened
  • Senior Matt Hansen singled up the middle on the first pitch of the game and, after stealing second base, came around to score two batters later. Servello ripped a base hit up the middle as well, driving in the first run of the game.
  • The Bearcats had an interesting bottom of the first, scoring four runs without notching a hit. Three bases loaded walks and a ground out brought four runs in to score, giving UC an early 4-1 advantage.
  • Toledo's offense exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-4 lead. Hansen reached on an error that allowed senior AJ Montoya to score, and the next at-bat senior Brad Boss singled Ryan home to make it 4-3. Servello hustled out a two-run triple to give the Rockets the lead, and Adolph smacked a home run off the scoreboard to bring in runs five and six of the inning.
  • Cincinnati scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth, two of which came on bases loaded walks. An error and an infield single helped the other two runs score and gave the Bearcats an 8-7 advantage.
  • Adolph's second homer of the day and third of the weekend tied the game in the top of the seventh.
  • UC took a 9-8 lead in the bottom half of the eighth inning on a two-out RBI double to right field.
  • Sophomore Austin Calopietro entered the game in a precarious situation in the eighth inning, but struck out all three batters he face to get Toledo out of trouble. The Rockets weren't able to take advantage, however, and fell to UC 9-8.
