Toledo Suffers 5-0 Setback at Western Michigan

Kalamazoo, Mich.— The Toledo baseball team opened up MAC play on Friday with a 5-0 loss at Western Michigan.

The Rockets surrendered three runs in the first inning and were not able to generate much offense to mount a comeback. UT tallied three hits on the afternoon and was shut out for the second time this season.

Junior Michael Jacob started on the mound and tied a career high with seven innings pitched. After allowing three runs in the first inning, Jacob allowed just one run on three hits in the following six frames and struck out five. Senior AJ Montoya, freshman John Servello, and junior Ross Adolph recorded the hits for the Rockets. Freshman Kyle Bischoff made his sixth appearance of the season, pitching the eighth inning for UT.

Toledo and Western Michigan will play game two on Saturday at 3:05 p.m.

How it Happened
  • WMU scored three runs in the bottom of the first. A pair of RBI singles did part of the damage for the Broncos. The third run was scored when WMU put runners on first and third, and both runners proceeded to steal second and home on the Rockets.
  • Senior Dalton Bollinger showed off his glove in the third inning. He reached over the fence to snag a foul ball for the second out and made a terrific scoop to secure out No. 3.
  • An RBI single to left field in the bottom of the fourth brought in Western Michigan's fourth run of the day. A leadoff walk followed by a sacrifice bunt set the stage for WMU to extend its lead.
  • The Broncos scored their fifth and final run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a wild pitch. Another leadoff walk, followed by a single to left field, put Western Michigan in position to add an insurance run.
  • Toledo had a late offensive spark in the ninth inning. Servello and Adolph led off with back-to-back singles, but UT was unable to build off the situation.
