Cincinnati, Ohio— Toledo scored eight runs in the final three innings en route to a 13-7 road victory over Cincinnati on Saturday.
Junior
Ross Adolph and freshman
John Servello both tallied three hits, drove in three runs, and scored three runs against the Bearcats. Those offensive totals were all career highs for Servello. The duo hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the ninth inning, the first such achievement by Toledo since Jason Edwards and Chris Dudics achieved that feat against Olivet College on April 6, 2010. Sophomore
Michael Ryan led the way with a career-high four RBIs and smacked a home run in the top of the second inning.
Saturday marked the third time this season Toledo has slugged three home runs in one game (at Austin Peay on Feb. 23, at Southeastern Louisiana on March 6).
Senior
Sam Shutes started on the mound for UT and threw 5.1 innings, striking out five. Freshman
Kyle Bischoff and junior
Nate Haugh pitched out of the bullpen for the Rockets and both were able to keep the Cincinnati bats in check long enough for Toledo to hold on.
The series finale between the Rockets and Bearcats will be at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at Marge Schott Stadium.
How it Happened
- Ryan started things off with a solo home run to left field to put Toledo ahead, 1-0, in the top of the second inning.
- Cincinnati tied things up in the bottom half of the second. A bases loaded infield single brought in UC's first run of the day.
- Toledo took the lead again in the fourth inning. Adolph hustled out an RBI triple and then scored on Ryan's fielder's choice to make the score 3-1.
- Two more runs came in courtesy of Ryan in the sixth inning. With two men on, the sophomore lined a single into left field that scored both runners to extend Toledo's lead to 5-1.
- Cincinnati got those two runs back in the bottom of the sixth on a pair of RBI singles.
- The Rockets continued to score in bunches, plating three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Hansen hustled out a sacrifice bunt attempt and reached first base thanks to an error by the Bearcats, allowing senior Corey Tipton to score. Boss drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Adolph drove an RBI double off the wall in right field.
- UC would not go away, scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh and eighth to pull within one, 8-7. The four combined runs in those two innings all came with two outs.
- Toledo put the game away in the top of the ninth, scoring five runs to make it 13-7. Servello and Adolph's back-to-back dingers were the offensive highlight for the Midnight Blue and Gold. Servello blasted a three-run shot to left field, and on the next pitch Adolph launched a towering solo homer to right field. Junior Riley Campbell singled up the middle to drive in the final run of the day.
