Clarksville, Tenn.— Despite a heroic, two-out home run in the top of the ninth from freshman
John Servello, Toledo fell to Austin Peay, 8-7, in 10 innings on Sunday.
The Rockets took the lead after a four-run fourth inning, but the Governors scored four times in the bottom half to answer right back and take a 6-5 lead. With two outs in the top of the ninth and Toledo trailing 7-6, Servello sent a ball over the left field fence to tie the score. Austin Peay's Imani Willis singled to left field in the bottom of the tenth to knock in the winning run.
Senior
Sam Shutes started the game for the Rockets, while freshman
Bryce Davis, senior
Alex Wagner, junior
Nate Haugh, and junior
Luke Schaefer all saw time out of the bullpen. Haugh was excellent for Toledo, coming into the game in the seventh inning and giving UT three shutout innings. The junior struck out four and allowed just two baserunners. Davis, for the second straight weekend, pitched well in an extended outing out of the pen, hurling 2.1 innings of one-run ball and striking out four.
The Rockets head south next weekend for a tournament at LSU, followed by a midweek contest at Southeastern Louisiana and a weekend series at Georgia.
How it Happened
- Austin Peay scored twice in the bottom of the first. The Governors' runs came on a solo home run and an RBI single up the middle that ricocheted off Shutes.
- Senior Brad Boss smacked his second home run of the weekend in the top half of the second to halve the Rockets' deficit.
- Toledo chased Austin Peay's starter in the top of the fourth, totaling four runs on five hits that inning.Junior Ross Adolph singled to lead things off and senior AJ Montoya followed with a double down the left field line. Boss, freshman Trace Hatfield, and Servello all singled in runs and sophomore Michael Ryan's deep fly ball to left center field drove in a run.
- Austin Peay answered with four runs in the bottom half of the fourth to take a 6-5 lead. Davis, coming in from the bullpen, got Toledo out of the inning with a clutch strikeout.
- Hatfield doubled in the top of the sixth, then scored on a single through the left side of the infield from Ryan to tie the game at 6-6.
- The Governors scored in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-6 lead. The damage was limited due to Ryan throwing out a would-be base stealer for the first out of the inning.
- Down to their last out, the Rockets tied it up with a home run to left field from Servello. Austin Peay had retired nine straight batters prior to the home run.
- The Governors walked off in the bottom of the tenth on Willis' single to left field.
