Baton Rouge, La.— The Toledo baseball team hung tough with No. 14 LSU in Baton Rouge on Friday night, but the Tigers came out on top, 8-1.
Junior
Michael Jacob started the game for UT and, after allowing three runs in the first two innings, he kept the Rockets in the game with four straight scoreless frames. LSU scored in the bottom of the first inning and twice in the second, but Toledo would get one of those runs back in the third. Freshman
John Servello drove in freshman
Zach Schwartzenberger to make the score 3-1. Trouble arose in the seventh inning, though, in the form of an LSU grand slam.
Servello led the Rockets with two hits and drove in the team's only run. Schwartzenberger and senior
Matt Hansen, along with Servello, tallied extra-base hits on Friday.
LSU starting pitcher Zach Hess pitched seven innings, did not allow a walk and struck out a career-high 13.
Toledo hits the diamond again on Saturday afternoon with a game against Southeastern Louisiana at Alex Box Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. CT.
How it Happened
- LSU struck first, scoring on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first. Toledo limited the damage, though, by turning an inning-ended double play.
- The Tigers plated a couple more runs in the bottom of the second. Another fielder's choice and an RBI single to right field did the job.
- The Rockets scored their first run of the game on an RBI double by Servello. His double down the right field line scored Schwartzenberger, who doubled himself to lead off the inning.
- After allowing runs in his first two innings, Jacob threw four consecutive scoreless frames, during which he struck out five and allowed just two baserunners.
- Toledo ran into trouble in the seventh. The first three LSU batters of the inning walked, which set the Tigers up for Hunter Feduccia's grand slam to right field. The big swing made the score 7-1.
- LSU tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly.
