YPSILANTI, Mich. – In their second Mid-American Conference match of the season the Toledo volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision (22-25, 23-25, 21-25) to Eastern Michigan on Saturday night inside the Convocation Center.
Toledo offensively was led by freshman
Chloee Kleespies and senior
Annie Beasley who each had nine kills on the night. Close behind was senior
Rachel Vidourek and junior
Haley Sendelbach with seven kills.
Senior
Brianna Foster just missed out on clinching her third straight double-double as she had 35 assists along with nine digs. The loss drops UT's overall record to 5-9 (0-2 MAC) while the Eagles move to 9-9 (1-1 MAC). Toledo will be back in action next weekend as the Rockets begin a four-game homestand starting on Thursday, Sept. 28 against Ball State.
First Set:
The Rockets were firing on all cylinders to begin the first set as the Midnight Blue and Gold jumped out to an early 8-5 lead. Midway through and the set tied at 11, the Eagles and Rockets alternated points which resulted in six ties before EMU pulled ahead for a 20-18 lead. EMU ultimately claimed the first set, 25-22 after scoring seven of the final 11 points. Leading the way for UT was junior
Haley Sendelbach with four kills.
Second Set:
It was back and forth early in the second set between both teams before EMU grabbed six of seven points to gain a 10-6 lead. Eastern Michigan went on to take a 12-8 lead before the Rockets roared backed, using a run of four straight points to take a 16-15 lead and force an EMU timeout. After the timeout, the Eagles rallied with four straight points to regain the lead and force UT to take a timeout. Down the stretch, the set was tied at 23-23 after Kleespies collected back-to-back kills for UT. The Eagles responded with two straight points to take the set and head into the intermission up 2-0. Â
Third Set:
Once again it was a close set in the third as no team led by more than one point through the first 18 points. Eastern Michigan took advantage of a block, service ace and kill to regain the lead for good midway through the set. Â Overall, EMU scored eight of 11 points for a 17-12 lead. Toledo made a strong comeback attempt near the end as the Rockets cut the lead to 22-20 after a kill by Kleespies. The Rockets once again cut the lead to two after a kill by reigning MAC West offensive player of the week
Annie Beasley, but EMU closed out the match with back-to-back kills for a 25-21 third set victory.
