Toledo to Compete in Boilermaker Invitational This Weekend

WEST LAFAYETTE, IN - Toledo will participate in Purdue's Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday-Sunday, April 15-16. The two-day tournament will be held on the Kampen Course (Par-72, 7,465 yards) at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.
This weekend's event will serve as UT's final tuneup prior to the Mid-American Conference Championships. It will consist of 54 holes with 36 holes being played on Saturday and the final 18 holes scheduled for Sunday. There will be a shotgun start at 8:45Â a.m. both days.
The Rockets will face an impressive field as nine of the 15 teams are ranked in Golfstat's Top 100 - No. 11 Kent State, No. 17 UNLV, No. 34 Northwestern, No. 35 Purdue, No. 49 Michigan, No. 53 Central Florida, No. 54 Michigan State, No. 58 Ohio State and No. 90 Cincinnati.
Indiana, Miami, Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois and Wisconsin round out the playing field.Â
Toledo's lineup at the Boilermaker Invitational will include junior co-captain Stephen Watts, freshman Joe Bryce, freshman Thomas Thurloway, freshman Grant Godfrey and junior co-captain Colin Joseph. Watts and Thurloway currently lead UT with 73.7 and 73.9 stroke averages, respectively.
UT is coming off a fifth-place finish at the Hoosier Invitational on April 1-2. The Rockets shot a team score of 18-over par 870 (291-286-293) to finish tied with Fort Wayne (287-290-293) among 14 teams at the Indiana University Golf Course (Par-71, 6,813 Yards).Â
Bryce (73-71-72) and Watts (73-72-72) paced UT with marks of a season-best three-over par 216 and four-over par 217 to finish tied for the 19th and 23rd spots among 78 individuals, respectively.
Bryce totaled four birdies at the Hoosier Invite to post Toledo's top score for the second-straight event. The Bathgate, Scotland native also fired a season-best even-par 71 in the second round.
Toledo will participate in the Boilermaker Invitational for the 10th time in the last 12 seasons. A year ago, UT finished in ninth place with a team score of 25-over par 889 (294-302-293) and former Rocket Otto Black tied for seventh place at two-under par 214 (70-73-71).
Second-ranked Illinois captured last spring's team title after recording rounds of 280, 277 and 290 for a tally of 17-under par 847, seven strokes ahead of host Purdue at 10-under par 854 (284-286-284). Individually, Illinois' Charlie Danielson earned medalist honors with a nine-under par 207 (70-65-72), edging out teammate Nick Hardy (68-72-70=210) by three strokes.

The Kampen Course, a Pete Dye design, is an 18-hole, links-style, par-72 championship golf course featuring large bent-grass greens, fairways and tees. The layout presents a challenge for golfers of all abilities with vast sand bunkers, native grasslands, ponds and a natural celery bog. Kampen offers five sets of tees with the championship tees playing over 7,400 yards and the forward tees playing at 5,300 yards.
Kampen is rated one of the top collegiate courses in the nation and has been awarded 4.5 stars on Golf Digest's "Places to Play." Kampen receives high marks as it is ranked as one of the most difficult golf courses in Indiana. The course has also played host to a number of prestigious collegiate and public tournaments such as the 2000 Men's Big Ten Championship, the 2003 Women's NCAA Championship, the 2004 Indiana Open, the 2005 Women's Western Amateur, and the 2008 Men's NCAA Championship.Â
Following the Boilermaker Invitational, UT will compete in the MAC Championships on Friday-Sunday, April 28-30 at the Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, OH.
