Box Score TOLEDO, Ohio - Freshman
Sophia Lewis scored a pair of goals to power Toledo over Akron, 4-2, in Mid-American Conference women's soccer play on Friday evening at Scott Park.
The Rockets (7-5-3, 4-1-2 MAC) dominated the match, out-shooting Akron 16-7 and taking four corner kicks without allowing a Zip corner attempt.
UT found the back of the net first on junior
Alena Sidwell's second goal of the season. Sidwell collected a loose rebound in the 18th minute and deposited the ball into the twine to put the Rockets ahead 1-0.
Akron (1-12-2, 0-6-1 MAC) knotted the match at 1-1 on a breakaway goal by Ashley Amato.
The Rockets regrouped and were able to regain the lead in the 41st minute on the first career goal by Lewis. Fellow freshman
Claire Cahalan forwarded the ball to Lewis who methodically made her move to create an open lane. The Rockets went to the half time break with a 2-1 edge.
Senior captain
Isa Echeverri doubled the lead for UT with her fourth tally of the season less than three minute into the second half. Echeverri found the ball in a crowd after a Toledo corner kick and snuck a shot just to the left of the Akron keeper for a goal.
In the 68th minute, Lewis tacked on another mark to increase the Rocket advantage to 4-1.Â
The Zips made a late push with Amato's second goal of the match in the 79th minute, but the match ended as a 4-2 victory for the home club.
Redshirt freshman
Madison Perrin, who leads the MAC in saves, stopped three shots in goal for the Midnight Blue & Gold.
The women's soccer team remains at home to play Buffalo on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1:05 p.m.
