UT Splits Pair of Matches on Final Day in Houston

Houston, TX - Toledo (4-2) split its matches on the final day of the Barcelona Labor Day Classic. The Rockets began the day off with their third five-set victory of the season, defeating North Florida, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-27, 15-8. UT then dropped a difficult battle against host Houston Baptist, 3-1 (16-25, 25-27, 25-20, 19-25).

"We had a great win today. UNF is a good team and they did a lot great things, but we were able to execute and pull out a victory," said head coach Greg Smith.

"Houston Baptist came out very strong. We played a solid second set and got into a great rhythm in the third. We started off the last set strong but struggled to maintain our momentum. We learned a lot this weekend and we will take it all into practice this coming week in preparation for our home tournament."

Junior OH Saige Thomas and sophomore OH Gracey Tuifua paced Toledo's offense, notching 25 and 24 kills a piece, respectively. Sophomore S Carly Townsend quarterbacked the Rockets with 103 assists on the day.

UT tallied 12 total service aces in the two games. Senior DS Maggie Johnston tied her career-high with three in Toledo's match vs. UNF.

Sophomore libero Maurissa Leonard posted 37 total digs and sophomore DS Andrea Stephenson added 23.

Both Leonard and senior RSH Mary O'Connor were selected to the all-tournament team for their efforts this weekend.

Match 1
The lead changed hands five times in the opening set. After the score was evened at 22, the Ospreys claimed a 25-23 victory.

Set 2 was a tight battle that saw 12 tied scores. The Rockets ultimately claimed a 25-21 victory after holding UNF to a .000 attack mark.

Toledo posted a match-high 19 kills in Set 3 that propelled them to a 25-22 win.

After a 21-21 tie in the fourth frame, the score was evened after every other point until the Ospreys were able to register two-straight kills to claim the set, 27-25.

The Midnight Blue & Gold jumped ahead in the final set and never relinquished the lead.

Match 2
Houston Baptist downed the Rockets in a 25-16 first-set victory after registering an impressive .393 ATK% as a team.

Toledo was able to knot the score 10 times in the second frame but two HBU terminations locked in the Huskies' 27-25 win.

The Rockets found their momentum in Set 3 and posted a .395 attack mark, but the Huskies ended the match with a 25-19 fourth-set victory.

UT returns to Toledo next weekend to host the Asics Invitational. The Rockets will welcome Saint Francis (PA), Fort Wayne and Marshall to Savage Arena.
