TOLEDO, OH – The Toledo men's tennis team welcomes Duquesne and Butler to the glass city this weekend on Feb. 27. Saturday's double header starts off at 1:00 p.m. when UT faces Duquesne and continues at 7:00 p.m. when Toledo hosts Butler.
Toledo had a match against Morehead State scheduled for Friday, Feb. 26, but because of weather complications it has been rescheduled for March 11 at 1:00 p.m.
Both matches will be held at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Maumee, OH. During Saturday's matches, Jeff Traudt from State Farm Insurance will be sponsoring free food for all fans at the match.
"We need to keep grinding daily and working hard. If we don't, we could get defeated by anyone," said head coach
Al Wermer. "We have to do more than just show up on match day with our racquets."
The Rockets have a record of 6-6 in dual matches this season. UT was on a five-match winning streak until it fell to Dayton, 5-2, this past Sunday.
Last week, freshman
Vince Anzalone was named Mid-American Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week. It is the first time Anzalone has been awarded with this honor and the first time a Toledo player has been awarded this season.
Anzalone went 3-0 at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, helping the Rockets to three team victories. With the score tied 3-3 between Toledo and Detroit on Feb. 12, it came down to a game-clinching three-set match between Anzalone and Detroit senior Rafael Orantes at No. 3 singles. Both players recorded 6-4 victories but Anzalone pulled away with a 6-2 win in the third set.
On Feb. 13, Anzalone moved into the No. 2 single spot and walked away two victories, a 6-2, 6-2 victory over his Aquinas College opponent and a 7-6, 6-4 victory over his Wayne St. opponent.
