Rockets' Season Comes to an End with 3-0 Setback to No. 3 Ohio

DeKalb, IL – Toledo's season came to an end on Friday evening with a heartbreaking 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-23) setback to No. 3 Ohio in the 2016 Mid-American Conference quarterfinals at Victor E. Court in DeKalb, IL.

"We're disappointed in losing that match," said head coach Greg Smith. "We played a tough Ohio team that exploited some of our weaknesses. But I'm very proud of our team and the season they've had overall. This is a huge step for our program and for moving forward in the future."

Junior MB Annie Beasley paced the Rockets with 11 terminations, while junior OH Saige Thomas trailed with 10 and senior RSH Mary O'Connor posted nine. Beasley and Thomas each tallied a team-high three blocks.

Sophomore libero Maurissa Leonard notched a team-high 11 digs in the backcourt. Junior DS Lauren Bakaitis posted nine, junior DS Brianna Foster tallied eight and both senior DS Maggie Johnston and sophomore S Carly Townsend added seven.

Ohio commanded the front half of the opening set until the Rockets were able to knot the score at 18 with an ace by Bakaitis. UT pulled ahead, 21-20, on an error by the Bobcats, but OU was quick to take back its lead (22-21) and never looked back en route to a 25-23 win.

UT jumped out in front in the second frame but Ohio put six-straight points on the board to take a 7-4 lead. The Bobcats held the Rockets to their lowest hitting percentage of the tournament and out-blocked Toledo, 5-0, in their 25-14 second-set victory.

The Midnight Blue & Gold opened their crucial third set with a 10-4 lead due to the help of three terminations from Beasley and a pair of kills from O'Connor. OU quickly rallied with a 9-3 run to even the score at 13. The Rockets came out from their last timeout to postpone OU's match point with a huge termination from Thomas, but Ohio's kill leader Jaime Kosiorek quickly sealed in its 25-23 victory.

The Rockets finish their season with an overall record of 16-14 and an 8-8 mark in the league play.
