Toledo Opens Tournament with First Homecourt VIctory

TOLEDO, OH – Toledo (2-9) was victorious in its first match of the Blue/Gold Invitational with a 3-2 (19-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-10, 15-7) win over Robert Morris (5-6).

Sophomore MB Rachel Vidourek once again paced UT offensively with 16 kills, .400 attack percentage (16-4-30) and a match-high seven rejections. Freshman MB Haley Sendelbach and junior OH Saige Thomas joined Vidourek in double figures with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Freshman OH/S Carly Townsend was also extremely efficient for the Rockets with nine kills and a .375 ATK%.

Senior S Alex Hines quarterbacked UT's attack by distributing 44 assists and adding two terminations.

Toledo also received strong defensive contributions from freshman libero Maurissa Leonard who had 26 digs, sophomore DS Maggie Johnston with 16 and sophomore DS Lauren Bakaitis who added 11. Bakaitis also posted a team-high three service aces.

Toledo found itself down 25-19 at the end of the first set, with the Colonials holding UT to a -.049 ATK%.

The Rockets never trailed in the second set and improved to a .220 hitting percentage. Senior DS Maddie Strall crushed a termination from the back row to end the set.

Both teams battled it out in the third set, tying the score 10 times. Unfortunately, Toledo was not able to overcome the Colonials' impressive .460 ATK% and dropped the set 25-21.

The Midnight Blue & Gold took control of the fourth set from the start, scoring the first six points. Robert Morris answered back and closed the Rockets' lead to two (6-4). UT scored the next 10 points and rode to an easy 25-10 victory. Toledo's intensity proved too much for the Colonials as they were held to a -.103 ATK%.

The Rockets confidently swept Robert Morris in the final set 15-7. Toledo closed out the set with a service error by the Colonials.

UT will be back in action against tonight witha  7:00 p.m. match vs. Radford. The Highlanders dropped a 3-2 decision in the first match of the day to Cleveland State.
