BOWLING GREEN, OH - The Toledo softball team (12-18) was swept by arch-rival Bowling Green in a Mid-American Conference doubleheader on Sunday at BG's Meserve Field.
The Rockets dropped game one 7-3, and game two 4-0 in the team's first conference action of the season.
Five fielding errors doomed the Midnight Blue & Gold in game one. The Falcons jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first and three more in the top of the second to put the Rockets in a 5-0 hole.
Sophomore P Emily Anderson entered the game in the second inning for starter junior Marla Gooding, and allowed just four hits with five strikeouts through 5.2 innings.
The UT offense took awhile to get going, as it was shut out through the first six innings.
In the bottom of the final frame, the Rockets scored three runs to cut into the BG lead on home runs by sophomore IF Chandler Rice and freshman C Kaitlyn Bergman.
It was Bergman's first collegiate four-bagger.
Rice was one of two UT batters with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a solo homer and a double. Freshman OF Ashley Rausch went 2-for-4 in game one with a stolen base, while freshman IF Samantha Showalter went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.
In game two, BG started early again, jumping out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. The two-run first was more than enough for the Falcons, as UT could not get its offense rolling, combining for just five hits as a team.
Bergman added a single in the second game of the doubleheader following her pinch-hit homer in game one. Graduate transfer Nichole Toven went 1-for-3 in the game with a double, while junior OF Jessica Lemieux, sophomore OF Celeste Fidge, and Showalter each tallied hits as well.
Anderson allowed 10 hits in the game, however, she struck out eight batters for a total of 13 on the day.
The Rockets continue MAC play when they hit the road for four games next weekend. UT will take on Western Michigan in a doubleheader on Friday, April 3, followed by games at Northern Illinois on Saturday-Sunday, April 4-5.
