TOLEDO, OH - The Toledo men's tennis team got back on the winning track on Friday, sweeping its doubleheader against Butler and Ferris State.
The team improved to 3-4 on the year.
"The good thing about the Butler match is we had to fight back after losing doubles,” head coach Al Wermer said. “Ferris also pushed us hard, so these pressure situations toughen us for later in the season."
The Rockets opened the day by defeating the Bulldogs 5-2 despite losing the doubles point.
Sophomore Stjepan Sisko and freshman Omar Espinosa were the only duo to earn a doubles victory, winning 6-3 in the top doubles spot.
Toledo bounced back in singles play, as Sisko would go on to win in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, at the top singles spot.
Seniors Mark Singnil and Nicky Wong, Espinosa and Meza each earned singles victories as well, in Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 6, respectively.
Singnil, Wong and Espinosa each won in two sets, while Meza fought for a 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 victory in No. 6 singles.
In the second match of the day, the Rockets earned a second-straight 5-2 victory, this time over Ferris State.
Sisko and Espinosa teamed up again in the top doubles spot and won their second match of the day, 6-4. The duo of junior Garrett Cona and freshman Stephen Miller combined for a 7-6 in No. 3 singles to help the Midnight Blue & Gold clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, Sisko, Espinosa and Meza earned their second wins of the day, while Miller added a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles to close out the scoring for the Rockets.
With the wins, Sisko improved to 5-1 on the year, while Espinosa sits at 3-3 on the season. Miller's victory against FSU was his first in his collegiate career.
The Rockets are back in action with another doubleheader Saturday against Northwestern Ohio and Wayne State.
