TEMPE, AZ - The Toledo softball team took on two top 25 teams on Saturday at the Louisville Slugger Invitational hosted by Arizona State, dropping its first game to No. 3 Michigan, 9-0, in five innings and losing game two to the host No. 21 Sun Devils, 11-2.
The losses drop the Midnight Blue & Gold to 4-9 on the season.
In game one, the Rockets were shut down offensively, recording just two hits against the Wolverines. Junior OF Jessica Lemieux went 1-for-2, while graduate transfer SS Nichole Toven went 1-for-1 with a walk.
Freshman Kylie Gross took the loss for the Midnight Blue & Gold, while junior Marla Gooding came in for relief, pitching four innings and allowing just one earned run with two strikeouts.
In game two, the Sun Devils got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but sophomore P Emily Anderson held ASU scoreless the next three innings.
Senior IF Allissa Turkovich went 2-for-3 in the game, while Lemieux and sophomore UT Chandler Rice each went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Lemieux's one hit was a double, and she also scored on Rice's single.
Senior OF Alyssa Smith scored the other run of the game for the Midnight Blue & Gold.
The Rockets conclude the Louisville Slugger Invitational on Sunday with a game against Binghamton. The contest is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
