TOLEDO, OH – Sophomore guard Jonathan Williams registered his first career double-double with 18 points and a career-high 10 rebounds to help Toledo register a 70-65 Mid-American Conference home victory over Miami on Tuesday evening.
Joining Williams in double figures were senior guard Julius Brown and senior forward J.D. Weatherspoon with 13 points apiece. Junior center Nathan Boothe also scored 10 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists.
The Rockets dominated the glass by a 35-23 margin thanks to Williams' efforts and held a slim edge, 49.1-48.0, in the shooting department.
Toledo (12-8, 4-3 MAC) used a 9-4 run midway through the first half -- sparked by freshman guard Stuckey Mosley's three-point field goal - to lead 34-27 at the break.
Miami (7-13, 2-5 MAC) was led by junior guard Eric Washington's 16 points.
The Rockets' lead reached 10 on Williams' trey two minutes after intermission. Toledo could never put the RedHawks completely away and junior guard Willie Moore's layup capped an 8-0 run for Miami which tied the score at 65-65 with 1:11 left.
Williams then made three of four attempts from the line and Miami missed its last two shots. Williams' dunk as time ran out was the exclamation point on the win.
Toledo returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 31 with a trip to DeKalb, IL to battle Northern Illinois.
