Rockets Split Doubleheader; Defeat IUPUI, Fall to Butler

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Toledo men's tennis team split its two matches on Saturday, Feb. 22, falling to Butler in its first match 4-3, but defeating IUPUI in its second match 6-1.

The Rockets are now 5-10 on the season.

“Overall, I was impressed with our consistency, grit, focus and teamwork all weekend,” head coach Al Wermer said.

In its match against Butler, Toledo hung tough in doubles play, but lost all three matches. Sophomore Garrett Cona and freshman Stjepan Sisko fell 8-6 in the No. 1 spot, juniors Mark Singnil and Nicky Wong lost 8-7 in No. 2, and junior Roberto Meza and freshman Boris Pak fell 8-7 as well in the No. 3 slot.

The Rockets bounced back in singles play, as all they took home wins in all three of the top spots.

Singnil improved his singles winning streak to eight matches, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in No. 1 singles, while Sisko won 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot and Wong defeated his opponent 6-4, 6-2 in No. 3 singles.

In their second match of the day, the Rockets overwhelmed the Jaguars, winning 6-1 and scoring a victory in all but two matches.

Both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams bounced back from losses earlier in the day to win against IUPUI as Cona and Sisko won 8-5 and Singnil and Wong won 8-4. Meza and Pak were up 7-6 when their match was called.

Singnil once again won in singles play, upping his streak to nine consecutive wins, while Sisko and Wong also earned their second wins of the day in No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.

Cona was taken to a third set, before defeating his opponent by the score of 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. Pak also earned a win in No. 6 singles, in a three set 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory.

The Rockets will travel to the state of Florida for their next three matches against Embry-Riddle on March 2, Florida Atlantic on March 3 and Xavier on March 5. The team will also hold its annual Alumni Day on Saturday, March 1 in Key Biscayne, FL.
