LOUISVILLE, KY - The Rockets earned their first victory of the 2014 season on Thursday, defeating Tennessee Tech 5-2 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Toledo also faced off against No. 47 Louisville, falling to the Cardinals 6-1.

“We can take some confidence from the team win earlier today, and definitely from a great doubles outing versus Louisville” head coach Al Wermer said. “We know we can be good, but we know it's a process.”

In their first match of the day, the Rockets won two of three matchups against TTU to secure the doubles point. Freshman Stjepan Sisko (Kastel Stari, Croatia) and sophomore Garrett Cona (Silver Lake, OH) recorded a 6-1 victory in No. 2 doubles, and sophomore Ryan Jorgensen (Toledo, OH) teamed up with freshman Boris Pak (Moscow, Russia) to take No. 3 doubles 6-3.

Juniors Mark Singnil (Samutsakorn, Thailand) and Nicky Wong (Mansfield, OH) led 5-4 in No. 1 doubles when the match was called short.

In singles play, Singnil recorded his fourth win of the season and second in No. 1 singles with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-5 victory. With the win, he improves to 3-2 overall on the season.

Sisko and Wong added wins in No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, and junior Roberto Meza (Antofagasta, Chile) earned a three-set victory in No. 5 singles.

UT also earned the doubles point against Louisville in the second match of the day.

Sisko and Cona earned their second No. 2 doubles victory of the day, with a 6-3 triumph over the Cardinals, while Wong and Singnil scored a doubles 6-5 win in the No. 1 spot.

The Rockets return home for a doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 1 against Youngstown State and Ferris State. The first match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Shadow Valley Tennis Club, followed by the 6:00 p.m. match against FSU.
