3/2/2013 11:17:00 PM

TOLEDO, OH - Ball State's backcourt tandem of Jauwan Scaife and Jesse Berry proved to be too much for Toledo to handle on Saturday afternoon in the Rockets' 86-72 Mid-American Conference home setback to the Cardinals inside Savage Arena.

Scaife (28 pts) and Berry (22 pts.) combined for 50 points and 10 treys as BSU (13-14, 6-8 MAC) shot 54.7 percent from the field and 50 percent (12-of-24) from behind the three-point arc.

Junior G Rian Pearson led Toledo (13-13, 8-6 MAC) with 20 points, and he was joined in double figures by junior F Matt Smith (16 pts.), freshman C Nathan Boothe (12 pts.) and sophomore G Julius Brown (11 pts.).

Toledo was leading 50-48 early in the second half when Ball State scored 15 straight points to take a 63-50 lead with 10:54 to play. The Rockets rallied to get within two at 71-69 with 5:02 remaining when Brown, junior F Reese Holliday and senior G Dominique Buckley connected for three straight treys. Scaife answered with a three-point bomb of his own.

Berry hit a trey two possessions later to push the lead to 77-69 with 3:19 to play, and Toledo never came closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Ball State outrebounded the Rockets (45-24), and held UT to a 38.3 FG%, helping the Cardinals overcome a 21-10 deficit it the turnover column and register their third straight victory in Savage Arena.

Toledo returns to action with its home finale vs. Northern Illinois on Tuesday, March 5 in Savage Arena. Tip-off time is set for 7:00 p.m. with a Senior Night ceremony being held following the contest.
