Toledo Falls at Perennial Power Coastal Carolina, 10-4

3/7/2012 9:20:00 PM

CONWAY, SC - Toledo dropped a 10-4 decision to Coastal Carolina on Wednesday afternoon at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field. With the setback, the Rockets fall to 3-8 on the season.

UT struggled offensively for the second consecutive game and was limited to three hits by a trio of Chanticleers' (5-4) hurlers. Toledo was also held to three hits in a 2-0 loss at the College of Charleston last evening.

Senior 1B Mark Lapikas, junior DH Andy Mix and freshman SS Dan Zuchowski collected hits in today's matinee, but it was not enough as the Rockets suffered their sixth straight loss. Lapikas provided UT's only offense with a grand slam in the fourth frame for his second round tripper of the season.

Freshman RHP Alec Schmenk (0-1) was tagged with the setback, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits with a pair of strikeouts in 0.2 innings of relief.

Freshman RHP Andrew Marra made his first collegiate start for the Midnight Blue & Gold, yielding four runs (two earned) on five hits over the opening 2.1 frames in a no-decision.

Coastal Carolina's 3B Rich Witten (3-for-4, RS, 2 RBI), SS Justin Creel (3-for-4, 2 RS, RBI) and 2B Tripp Martin (3-for-3, 2 RS, 3 RBI) did a bulk of the damage for the victors, combining for nine hits, six RBI and five runs scored.

The home team touched up UT pitching for a pair of runs in the first inning, six in the third and two more in the seventh to help them win back-to-back games for the first time this season.

The Chanticleers' Javier Reynoso was credited with the victory in a controlled start, giving up four unearned runs on two hits in 3.0 innings.

Toledo and Coastal Carolina will play each other again on Friday, March 9 at 4:00 p.m.
