TOLEDO, OH - Toledo came up on the losing end of its first Mid-American Conference opener against Ohio on Friday, falling 9-3 to the Bobcats at Scott Park. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 8-12 on the season, 0-1 in the league.
UT jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the second inning after producing six straight singles. Senior DH Matt Delewski, junior LF Tyler Grogg and senior 2B Joe Corfman each tallied an RBI.
The Bobcats answered right back though with their own outburst in the top of the third, plating six runs on six hits to take a 6-3 advantage. They added another run in the top of the sixth and two additional scores in the eighth to take the series-opening victory.
UT missed an opportunity to change the tide of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. After base hits by Corfman and sophomore C James Miglin and a catcher's interference call awarded to senior 1B Mark Lapikas loaded the bases, Ohio hurler Brent Choban recorded a strikeout and a groundout to end the offensive attack.
With the loss, junior RHP Mike Hamann's season record is now 0-4.
Ohio's win evens out its record at 10-10 overall, 1-0 in the conference. Choban went the distance for the visitors to collect the win, striking out eight UT batters.
These two teams will play the second game in the weekend series tomorrow with the first pitch slated for 1:05 p.m.
