Toledo Suffers Extra-Inning Loss at Xavier, 3-2

3/17/2012 11:01:00 PM

CINCINNATI, OH - Xavier's Patrick Paligraf collected a sacrifice fly in the 12th inning to lift the Musketeers to a 3-2 victory over Toledo on Saturday at Hayden Field. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 6-11 on the season.

XU's (6-11) Michael Moore started the game-deciding bottom of the 12th frame with a four-pitch walk. Moore advanced around the bases on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch, bringing Paligraf to the plate with one out. The shortstop delivered a fly ball deep enough to center field to bring Moore home with the game-winning run.

Senior RHP Alex Radon (0-3) was the hard-luck loser, allowing one run on no hits with one walk in 0.2 innings of relief.

Sophomore C James Miglin (3-for-6), senior 1B Mark Lapikas (2-for-6, RS), senior RF Jeff Cola (2-for-5, RBI) and freshman 3B Anthony Smith (2-for-4) paced UT offensively with multi-hit efforts against a trio of Xavier hurlers.

The Midnight Blue & Gold struck first with one run in its opening at-bat on a RBI single off the bat of Cola.

XU knotted the score at 1-1 in the second frame on the strength of three consecutive hits, including a run-scoring single by Mitch Elliott.

The home team then took its first lead of the non-league contest with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brian Bruening in the third inning.

The score remained the same until the eighth frame when Toledo manufactured a run on three hits and one Xavier error to send the game into extra frames.

For the second-consecutive game this weekend, Toledo received good pitching against a talented group of XU hitters. Senior RHP Matt Kuna made his first start of the season, allowing two runs on five hits with two punchouts in 5.0 innings. Senior RHP Tyler Scott, senior RHP Lincoln Rassi and junior RHP Cody Umbright also toed the rubber and allowed only four hits over the next 6.0 frames.

The Musketeers' Alex Vice (1-2) was awarded the victory, retiring all three UT batters he faced in the top of the 12th inning.

The Rockets will look to avoid the weekend sweep tomorrow in the series finale beginning at Noon.
