Rockets Drop Offensive Battle at Central Michigan, 3-0

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI - Toledo put together a strong offensive performance on Friday evening, but Central Michigan won the critical points to register a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-23) victory over the Rockets in McGuirk Arena. The Chippewas improved to 14-12 overall and 8-7 in the Mid-American Conference with the win, while the Rockets fell to 8-20 overall and 2-13 in conference play with the loss.

 "We played very well tonight except for one key spot in each set," Toledo Head Coach Greg Smith said. "That has been our Achilles heel all season and it showed up again tonight."

Senior OH Sondra Parys and junior MB Dakota Harkins tied for the team lead with10 kills, while sophomore MB Brooke Frazer tallied a team-high .462 attack percentage and three blocks. Freshman libero Celina Diaz topped UT defensively in the back row with a match-best 18 digs.

Sophomore OH Kaitlyn McIntyre tallied a match-high 17 kills for the Chippewas, while junior S Kelly Maxwell dished out 46 assists.

Statistics for the match were relatively even with CMU holding slight advantages in attack percentage (.298-.290) and digs (53-50) and UT outblocking the Chippewas by a 7-3 margin.

Both teams came out on fire as UT hit .457 and CMU countered with a .442 mark. The Rockets trailed for the majority of the set but had chances to even the score at 22, 23 and 24 but couldn't come up with the equalizer.

In Set 2, Toledo was within striking distance until the Chippewas used a 6-1 run late to claim a seven-point lead, 21-14.

The Rockets took a 20-19 advantage late in Set 3 on a Harkins kill but CMU responded with three straight points. Kills from junior OH Jordan Kielty and junior RSH Becca Reidy evened the score at 22-22. After a Rocket service error, Frazer evened the score at 23. CMU ended the match with a kill and a service ace.

Toledo closes out its season on Saturday at Eastern Michigan.  First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
