AKRON, OH - Toledo couldn't slow down a red-hot Akron offense on Saturday evening as the Zips posted a 3-1 (25-13, 25-16, 21-25, 25-22) victory over the Rockets at Rhodes Arena.
The hosts posted a .333 attack percentage, including .432 and .538 marks in the opening two sets. UT (8-17, 2-10 MAC) then was able to slow down the Zips (14-10, 7-5 MAC) following some lineup changes the rest of the way but it was too late.
Junior OH Lauren Rafdal topped the Rockets offensively with 12 kills, with freshman libero Celina Diaz tallying a team-high 14 digs. Junior MB Dakota Harkins notched a team-high three blocks and nearly reached double figures in kills with nine terminations.
Freshman S Alex Hines entered the contest late in opening set and collected a season-high 36 assists.
Freshman MB Kelsey Wilson led the Zips with a match-high 15 kills and .667 ATK% in her first career start. Wilson was one of five Akron players to reach double-digits in kills with senior MB Tina Dimitrijevs tallying 12 kills and a .524 ATK%.
The Zips utilized two separate 6-0 runs to post a 12-point win in Set 1 and a 12-3 Akron spurt proved to be the difference in Set 2.
The Rockets then put together a scoring run of their own to take control of Set 3. UT produced a six-point streak to take a 19-12 advantage. The closest Akron could come the rest of way was three points.
Toledo carried its momentum into Set 4 by surging to a 5-1 lead but Akron responded with a 7-1 rally for an 8-6 advantage. Neither team then could take more than a two-point cushion until the Zips scored four straight to take an insurmountable 23-19 lead. The Rockets were able to fight off to match points on a Harkins block and Reidy kill, but Dimitrijevs ended the contest with a kill of her own.
UT returns to action next weekend with its final two home matches of the 2012 campaign. The Rockets will host Northern Illinois at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 and MAC West Division leader Western Michigan at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.
