TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader with Mid-American Conference West Division leader Ball State at Scott Park on Friday. The top-ranked offense in the conference, Ball State out-slugged the Rockets by scores of 7-1 and 13-3 in the afternoon double-dip.
Providing the offense for Toledo was freshman C Alyssa Foy. Foy was responsible for all four Rocket runs on Friday, belting a solo home run in Game One and a three-run jack in Game Two. The pair of round-trippers were the first two of Foy's career as she finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBI.
"It felt nice being able to come out and hit and catch like I know I can," said Foy. "It was great to come through for the team, it was just too bad we couldn't walk away with two wins."
The Cardinals jumped ahead early in Game One, knocking an RBI single in the first and a two-run home run in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead on Toledo starter Jen Solanics.
After a scoreless third, Ball State expanded their lead to six in the fourth with two RBI singles that netted three runs. A solo home run in the fifth made the lead 7-0 and capped off the Cardinal scoring.
Foy launced her first home run of the day in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 7-1, but neither team would score over the final two frames as BSU held on to win.
Solanics took the loss in Game One to fall to 4-16 on the year. Senior P Shana Szypka pitched well for the Rockets in relief, holding the potent Cardinal offense to one run on four hits over the final 3.1 innings.
Game Two began with both offenses putting together big innings. In the Cardinal first, Ball State tallied four scores with a trio of RBI singles, along with a run-scoring triple.
The Rockets countered in their half of the first with three runs of their own as Foy blasted a three-run shot, her second of the day, to score Lindsey Tobias and Becki Heimbigner and cut the deficit to one.
From that point on it was all Ball State. The Cardinals scored six runs in the second, two more in the third and one final tally in the fourth to down the Rockets 13-3 in five innings.
Tobias finished the day 4-for-6 as the only Rocket to record multiple hits in either game. In Game One Tobias stroked a double and a triple while notching a pair of singles in Game Two.
The weekend of MAC competition continues on Saturday as the Rockets welcome the Miami RedHawks to Scott Park at 2 p.m.
