TOLEDO, OH - Akron took control early on Saturday evening and never trailed as the Zips (13-10, 4-5 MAC) posted a 59-41 victory over Toledo in Savage Arena.
Sophomore G Malcolm Griffin topped the Rockets offensively with 11 points, while freshman C Delino Dear contributed seven points and six rebounds. Redshirt freshman F Hayden Humes helped UT notch a 33-31 rebounding advantage with a team-high seven rebounds in addition to scoring six points.
Junior G Brett McClanahan paced a balanced Akron attack with 10 points as eight Zips scored six or more points.
The Rockets (4-19, 1-8 MAC) were limited by the Zips to their lowest point total and shooting percentage (31.9 percent) in a conference contest this season. Akron knocked down 11 treys and shot 45.8 percent from the field.
Akron knocked down three treys in the first three minutes to take an early 9-2 advantage. The Zips' momentum continued as the visitors' advantage climbed to 26-9 with just under seven minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
UT was able to cut into its deficit and had a chance to make it a 10-point contest at the half but the Zips hit a shot just before the buzzer for a 32-18 halftime lead.
Toledo returns to action when it travels to Athens, OH to face MAC East Division foe Ohio (11-12, 4-5 MAC). Tip-off time is set for 7:00 p.m.
