TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's basketball team started out strong but fell to Marshall, 85-73, on Saturday afternoon in Savage Arena.
Toledo (0-2) built a 40-30 halftime lead behind a balanced offensive attack that saw eight different Rockets finding the scoring column. Marshall (2-0) rallied in second half, though, to secure a comeback victory.
Senior
Sean Craig and junior
Sonny Wilson led the Rockets with 16 points apiece. Craig also topped UT with seven rebounds, while Wilson tied for the team lead with four assists. Freshman
Leroy Blyden Jr. and senior
Kyler Vanderjagt each chipped in 10 points, with Blyden dishing out four assists as well.
Marshall was paced by Jalen Speer's game-high 20 points, including six three-pointers. Wyatt Fricks added 15 points and seven rebounds, while Matt Van Komen tallied 14 points, 10 boards and four blocked shots.
The Thundering Herd's 25-2 run in the second half put the Rockets down 74-55 with 3:55 remaining and proved to be the difference in the contest.
QUOTING COACH KOWALCZYK
"The turning point of the game was when our second unit came into the game in the second half. Marshall hit back-to-back threes on scouting mistakes and that gave them the lead. You can't give a team like that confidence and momentum in the game. We're such a young team and not tough enough to deal with adversity right now, but we will be. It's no time to feel sorry for ourselves. We just need to keep working and find some answers."
