Toledo Baseball Summer Recap

TOLEDO, OH - With the fall season upon us and another academic year in full swing, several members of the Toledo baseball team experienced outstanding summers on the diamond. A total of 21 current Rockets participated in collegiate leagues in a variety of states including Ohio, Michigan and New York.

Below is a quick summary of how some of the Rockets fared this summer broken down in their individual leagues.

COASTAL PLAIN LEAGUE

Sophomore RHP Mike Hamann made five starts for the Thomasville Hi-Toms, tallying a 1-3 mark with a 3.14 ERA and one complete game. Hamann accumulated 28.2 innings of work, allowing 12 runs (10 earned) on 25 hits with 26 strikeouts.

Junior RHP Lincoln Rassi started eight of nine games for the Edenton Steamers, registering a 1-4 ledger with a 2.82 ERA. Rassi tallied 38.1 innings of work, yielding 23 runs (12 earned) on 31 hits with 33 strikeouts. He ranked second on the squad in contests started, fourth in innings pitched and tied for sixth in punchouts.

GREAT LAKES SUMMER COLLEGIATE LEAGUE

Junior C A.J. DeMarco, junior RHP Alex Radon and junior RHP Tyler Scott each played for the Lake Erie Monarchs. DeMarco batted .191 (13-for-68) with four runs scored, one triple and six RBI in 24 contests. Radon started seven of eight games, registering a 2-3 ledger with a team-low 2.54 ERA. He tallied 39.0 innings of work, yielding 13 runs (11 earned) on 29 hits with 17 strikeouts. Scott appeared in nine games in a relief role, tallying a 5.56 ERA with no decisions. He accumulated 11.1 innings of work, allowing 11 runs (seven earned) on 15 hits with nine strikeouts.

Senior OF Jason Edwards batted .098 (4-for-41) with five runs scored and two RBI in 28 games for the Hamilton Joes.

Junior INF Mark Lapikas and sophomore RHP Cody Umbright played for the Stark County Terriers. Lapikas hit .243 (28-for-115) with 15 runs scored, a team-high 10 doubles, two triples, a squad-best four home runs and a league-high 29 RBI in 36 contests. For his efforts, Lapikas was named to the Great Lakes All-Star Game. Umbright appeared in eight games (one start), tallying a 2-0 record with a 4.58 ERA. He accumulated 17.2 innings of work, allowing nine runs (all earned) on 19 hits with 12 strikeouts.

Senior INF/OF Chris Dudics hit .264 (33-for-125) with 21 runs scored, six doubles, one triple and 12 RBI for the Licking County Settlers.

VALLEY LEAGUE

Senior INF Jim Vahalik hit .281 (32-for-114) with 11 runs scored, eight doubles, one home run and 20 RBI in 33 games for the Haymarket Senators. For his efforts, Vahalik was named to the Valley League All-Star Game.

Senior RHP Matt Zahel appeared in 17 games (two starts), tallying a 2-0 record with a 3.77 ERA and a team-high five saves. Zahel accumulated 28.2 innings of work, allowing 14 runs (12 earned) on 37 hits with 32 strikeouts. For his efforts, Zahel was selected to the Valley League All-Star Game.

PROSPECT LEAGUE

Junior INF Joe Corfman batted .262 (38-for-145) with 22 runs scored, seven doubles, one triple, 16 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 41 games for the Chillicothe Paints.

NEW YORK COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE

Sophomore OF/INF Andy Mix and junior LHP Kyle Shaw played for the Geneva Red Wings. Mix hit .156 (10-for-64) with three runs scored, one double, one triple and three RBI in 24 contests. Shaw started seven games and finished with an impressive 4-2 mark with a miniscule 2.50 ERA. He accumulated 39.2 innings of work, allowing 15 runs (11 earned) on 39 hits with 34 strikeouts. Shaw finished first on the team in wins, as well as second in strikeouts and third in innings pitched.

Junior INF/OF Matt Delewski, sophomore RHP Jared Locke and redshirt freshman Tyler Grogg each played for the Webster Yankees. Delewski hit .317 (45-for-142) with 18 runs scored, five doubles and team-high 22 RBI in 38 contests. For his efforts, Delewski was named to the NYCBL All-Star Game. Grogg batted .324 (36-for-111) with 24 runs scored, four doubles, six RBI and squad-best 19 stolen bases in 33 games. Locke started seven of 10 games and finished with a 3-2 mark with a 3.43 ERA. He accumulated 44.2 innings of work, allowing 21 runs (17 earned) on 35 hits with 28 strikeouts.
