Softball Loses Pair to Start Action in Florida

3/6/2010 4:00:00 AM

CLEARWATER, FL - Toledo's softball team dropped its first two games at the Under Armour Invitational on Friday, falling 5-1 to Radford and 10-4 against Villanova.

The Rockets jumped to a quick start in game one against the Highlanders, as senior SS Lacey LeVier blasted her second home run of the season with one out in the first.

However, that would be the lone offense Toledo generated, as the Rockets had runners in scoring position in the second, third and fourth innings but could not push across another tally.

Radford, the 2009 Big South champions, scored single runs in the first and third innings and pulled away with a three-run fourth.

In the second game, Villanova jumped to a 5-0 lead through four innings, then tacked on five more runs in the top of the seventh. Toledo scored four times in its half of the frame without recording a hit, as two Wildcat errors, two hit by pitch, two walks and a wild pitch benefited the inning. LeVier and sophomore Brooke Gates had sac flies and senior C Mica Sanchez walked with the bases loaded, while sophomore OF Kattie Palmer came across the plate on a wild pitch.

Toledo (1-6) plays a pair of games Saturday, first at 3 p.m. against Robert Morris, followed by a 7 p.m. matchup against Saint Jospeh's.
