Dolphins Dart Past Rockets in Doubleheader

3/11/2010 2:00:00 AM

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Toledo's softball team started its doubleheader against Jacksonville with a four-run first inning, but the Rockets couldn't carry that momentum through the evening, falling by scores of 12-4 and 8-0 on Wednesday.

Back to back singles by junior Sam Toy and sophomore Brooke Gates got the inning started, and sophomore Jillian Spink was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior Mica Sanchez followed with an infield single that scored Toy, and senior Lacey LeVier struck the big blow of the inning with a bases-clearing double to put Toledo up 4-0.

However, the Rockets would muster just one more hit the remainder of the game as the Dolphins slowly edged their way back into the contest. Jacksonville scored twice in the third and twice in the fourth to even the score at four, then took control with a five-run fifth.

Toledo's bats fared little better in game two, as the Rockets were held to three hits. LeVier, Kate Ricchio and Kattie Palmer each had baseknocks for Toledo, which fell to 2-12 after the twinbill, while Jacksonville improved to 15-6.

The Rockets return to Clearwater, FL, for the remainder of their spring break trip at the Under Armour Classic. Toledo plays Kennesaw State at 4 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 6 p.m. matchup with Penn State.
