MAUMEE, OH -After dropping three tightly-contested matches in a row, the University of Toledo men's tennis team swept Case Western Reserve 7-0 Sunday at Shadow Valley to even its record at 4-4 this season.
The Rockets doubles teams took their matches by identical 8-5 scores. Winning at first doubles was Sven Burus and Aleksandar Elezovic, while Bryant Dudzik and Terence Weigand won at second doubles and Leo Sarria and Leonardo Henriques won at third doubles.
Toledo claimed victories in each of the singles matches in straight sets. Burus won at No. 1, Elezovic at No. 2 and Sarria at No. 3. Rounding out the singles wins for the Rockets were Gursher Harika in the fourth position, Dudzik at five and Henriques at six.
The Rockets rallied for the win over Case after falling against Detroit, 4-3, earlier Sunday. Toledo won the doubles point but couldn't hold on to the advantage in singles.
Elezovic and Burus won an 8-6 decision at first doubles, while the two "Leo's" - junior Henriques and sophomore Sarria - teamed up to take an 8-5 victory at third doubles.
Elezovic had little trouble in winning at second singles, 6-3, 6-2. Dudzik also coasted to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at fifth singles, but the Rockets could not get the third singles victory to clinch the match.
The Rockets played today without Knot Likitkumchorn, the team's number one singles player (shoulder) while Sarria played through an injury suffered on the first point of the Detroit match in the morning.
"We definitely got bit by an ill-timed injury bug against Detroit which put us in a bind," Al Wermer, head coach, said. "But that's going to make us tougher as we go along and I have no worries. We're working hard and the attitude is great. The guys are improving and we're having fun. We're going to get healthy. In the Case match, the ball rolled our way. The guys kept working at their games, and that's the way we do it at Rocket nation."
Toledo has a pair of home matches on Saturday, Feb. 13. At 4 p.m., the Rockets host IUPUI, while at 8 p.m., they will square off with Valparaiso.
