TOLEDO, OH - Once again the doubles teams for the Toledo Rockets were a dominant force as the final day wrapped up in the UT Rocket Invite. Three Toledo teams advanced to the finals, with the en fuego duo of Burus/Elezovic and Sarria/Likitkumchorn taking the titles.
Weather forced the tournament indoors on Saturday, as play was delayed and moved to the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Maumee. The change in venue proved to be of no consequence for the Rockets, who finished strong to conclude the Invite.
Playing in Blue (A) doubles, Sven Burus and Aleksandar Elezovic pushed their fall record to 12-0, taking the championship with an 8-3 win in the semifinals and an 8-5 victory in the final. In Gold (B) doubles, it was an all-Rocket final, as the team of Knot Likitkumchorn and Leo Sarria squared off with Terence Weigand and Bryant Dudzik. Likitkumchorn and Sarria prevailed in the final, downing their teammates 8-2.
It was also a great weekend for several Rockets in singles play. as seniors Gursher Harika and Likitkumchorn both went a perfect 3-0 in singles play for the weekend.
"I don't think we rated too high on the style-scale this weekend, however, there were some positives," said assitant coach Ryan Brookshaw. "We once again finished fairly strong, our younger guys got much-needed on-court experience and looked more and more relaxed, and our doubles play, which we'll rely heavily on in dual-match season, continued to just pretty-much snowplow through the competition."
The Rockets will have a week off to train, then will host their annual Alumni Day on Oct. 16. Following that, Toledo will participate in the ITA Regionals on Oct. 21-26 in Notre Dame, IN.
