Toledo Outlasts Belmont in Non-League Tilt, 6-5

2/28/2009 5:00:00 AM

NASHVILLE, TN - Toledo scored five runs in the final four innings to claim to a 6-5 victory against Belmont in Saturday's non-league tilt at Greer Stadium.

UT took full advantage of four hits, two walks and one Bruins' error over the sixth, seventh and eighth frames to overcome a 2-1 deficit and post the hard-fought win.

Sophomore RHP Matt Suschak (1-0), the second of four UT hurlers, earned his first collegiate win, giving up three runs on four hits with one strikeout in 2.0 innings of relief. Classmate Matt Zahel worked a perfect ninth frame to collect his second save in as many days.

UT finished with eight hits against three Belmont pitchers to even its record at 2-2 on the season. Sophomore Dan Sherwood (2-for-4, RS, 2 RBI) and classmate Chris Dudics (2-for-3, 2 RS) led the offensive charge with two hits each. Six of the nine Toledo starters finished with hits.

After spotting the home team a run in the second, Toledo knotted the score in the fourth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dudics.

The Bruins (3-4) quickly retook the lead in the fifth on a single by Derek Wiley, who finished with two hits and a game-high four RBI.

The Midnight Blue and Gold tied the score once again in the sixth on another sacrifice fly, this one courtesy of sophomore Josh Johnson to make the tally 2-2.

In the seventh, junior Aaron Dudley produced a two-out hit to set the table, before Sherwood blasted a two-run home run to give the visitors their first lead of the game. The Richfield, OH native had four round trippers a season ago.

Unfortunately, the Rockets' advantage did not last long, as Belmont's Wiley hit a three-run home run off Suschak in the bottom of the seventh.

Toledo did not panic despite giving up the lead and reclaimed the advantage for good in the eighth frame with two runs. Run-scoring hits to center field and shortstop by senior Josh Colliver and sophomore Jared Hoying respectively were the difference.

Sophomore RHP Matt Kuna started for Toledo and worked the first 5.0 innings, yielding two runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Belmont's Jimmy Stanley (0-2) was tagged with the loss, giving up three hits and one run in 1.2 frames. Tyler Graskewicz drew the start for the home team and worked the 7.0 innings, surrendering four runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

The Rockets and Bruins will wrap up their four-game series tomorrow at Greer Stadium starting at 1:00 p.m.
