TOLEDO - Sophomore Morgan Williams rushed for 155 yards and senior DaJuane Collins added 144 more as the Toledo Rockets cruised to a 47-21 victory over Eastern Michigan at the Glass Bowl Friday night.
It was the final home game for 19 Rocket seniors, and they were a key part of Toledo's victory. In addition to Collins' 144 yards and two touchdowns, safety Lester Richmond had an interception, and wide receiver Stephen Williams caught five passes for 45 yards.
Williams 221 career catches, just one shy of the UT record held by current New Orleans Saint Lance Moore (222 receptions from 2001-04).
"Eastern Michigan gave us a great, great challenge," said head coach Tim Beckman. "But these young men standing behind me (seniors) are the 19 reasons why we won the football game. We had great, great leadership this week and this season. I couldn't be prouder of these guys. It's all about this program and these seniors, and I couldn't be prouder of being in their lives this season. I appreciate what they did tonight and expect the same next week."
The Rocket defense did their share in this victory, forcing four Eagle turnovers and scoring its own touchdown, a fumble recovery in the end zone by junior Alex Johnson in the second quarter to give Toledo a 16-0 lead.
Following an EMU touchdown on a 48-yard pass from freshman quarterback Alex Gillett to junior Tyrone Burke, the Rockets struck back on a 55-yard scoring run by Collins. Toledo closed out the scoring in the first half on a 32-yard field goal by senior Alex Steigerwald to take a 26-14 lead into the locker room.
Toledo continued the scoring onslaught in the third quarter, as sophomore quarterback David Pasquale scored on a six-yard run on UT's first possession. Morgan Williams scored on a 22-yard run with 13:32 left in the game, and Collins finished it out with a four-yard score with 43 seconds left.
Pasquale, who rushed for 44 yards and two TDs, was one of three quarterbacks used by Toledo. Freshman Austin Dantin started and completed 10-of-11 passes for 116 yards. Senior quarterback Aaron Opelt, who was not expected to play due to a shoulder injury, came in for three series, completing 1-of-5 passes.
The Rockets (5-6, 3-4 MAC) finish out the 2009 regular season at arch-rival Bowling Green next Friday with a chance to even their record and become bowl eligible. Six wins would also give Toledo its best record since going 9-3 in 2005.
