COLUMBUS, OH - Toledo (0-1) opened its 2008 campaign with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-15) setback late this morning to host Ohio State (1-0) at the Sports Imports Classic in St. John Arena.
Junior Stephanie Kersting and freshman Amber DeWeerdt led the Rockets' attack with seven kills apiece, while junior Liz Sundburg notched a team-high .143 attack percentage with five kills and three errors in 14 attack attempts.
Kersting also paced UT's defense with six digs, while freshman Kassie Kadera added three digs to go along with a team-best 14 assists.
"We competed well at the beginning of the match but Ohio State was able to pull away from us," Toledo Head Coach Kent Miller said. "We stuggled quite a bit in the second game but came back with a strong effort in the third game. We still have a ways to go to compete with a team at Ohio State's level."
Katie Dull led the Buckeyes' attack with a match-high 11 kills, as OSU notched a .410 attack percentage thanks to three players ? Allie Schwardzwalder (.600 - 6-0-10), Kalia Calhoun (.467 - 7-0-15) and Dull (.400 - 11-3-20) ? registering attack clips of .400 or higher. Calhoun also paced OSU at the net defensively with 10 digs.
The Rockets will face Youngstown State in their second match of the day at 5:00 p.m.
