Toledo Suffers 50-35 Setback at Wright State

12/9/2008 5:00:00 AM

DAYTON, OH - Toledo could never get untracked on the offensive end on Tuesday evening in a 50-35 defeat to Wright State at the Nutter Center.  The Rockets' record dropped to 2-7 with the setback, while the Raiders notched their first win of the season to move to 1-6.

Senior G Jonathan Amos led UT offensively with nine points, while senior G Ridley Johnson added eight points.  Sophomore F Justin Anyijong led the Rockets to a 37-36 advantage on the boards by tying his career best with eight rebounds.

John David Gardner led WSU with a game-high 12 points and was only the player to score in double figures.

The Rockets limited WSU to 50 points along with a 37.7 field-goal percentage and a 1-for-19 effort from behind the three-point arc. UT couldn't overcome a season-low 29.2 field-goal percentage and a season-high 26 turnovers though as it saw its road record this season fall to 0-6.

“When you turn the ball over 26 times it's really hard to win no matter what you shoot,” said Toledo Head Coach Gene Cross about the Rockets' shooting struggles. “When teams are physical with you and you break off your cuts and allow them to dictate and impose their will on you you're more than likely going to lose.”

Wright State limited UT's leading scorer, senior G Tyrone Kent, to three points on just 1-of-4 shooting. He came into the contest averaging 16.9 points per game.

“Wright State did a good job of defending us and putting us outside of our comfort zone,” Cross said. “They made it hard for Tyrone tonight, and they did a very good job on him. He's our leading scorer and we need him to put the ball in the hole. He came off cuts and there were two defenders in his face.”

UT trailed just 20-16 at halftime but saw the game get away from them early in the second half. The Raiders opened the second half with an 11-2 run to take a 31-18 advantage.  The closest the Rockets could come the rest of the way was eight points with approximately five minutes to play.

“Everyone who knows me knows I hate to lose and I'd rather have gone into our break with a win,” Cross said. “A game like this gives me so much ammunition to get our team better, not just from a basketball standpoint but from a mental standpoint as well. I'm looking forward to the next few days of practice and so I can get on the road recruiting. It's going to be a very productive 11 days before our next game.”

Toledo returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 20 when it hosts Houston at Savage Arena. Tip-off time is set for 7:00 p.m.
