Final Stats
TOLEDO, OH - Toledo completed its three-game sweep of Ball State with a 10-6 victory in Sunday's Mid-American Conference series finale at Scott Park. With the victory, the Rockets improve to 22-21 overall and 11-10 in the league.
Junior Scott Boley had a big day offensively for the Rockets and finished with three hits and three RBI, while juniors Drew Hoisington and Nate McKeon tallied two hits apiece. Eight of the UT nine starters had at least one hit against five BSU hurlers.
Senior Greg Gompf, the second of three UT pitchers who saw action in today's series finale, was credited with his first victory of the season. The Mt. Gilead, OH native threw three relief innings and allowed two runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Freshman Justin Collop closed out the contest for the home team and tossed the final four scoreless frames to collect his second save of the season.
After spotting the visitors a run in the top of the first, Toledo quickly countered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning on a RBI groundout off the bat of Scott Boley. Hoisington started the frame with a double and after advancing to third base on a fly ball, the Cuyahoga Falls, OH native tallied the equalizer on Boley's 32nd RBI of the season.
A frame later, the Rockets put four runs on the scoreboard to make it a 5-1 contest. UT sent eight batters to the plate and senior Joel Visser, freshman Tim Krofcheck and Hoisington tallied RBI's to establish a four-run cushion.
Not to be outdone, BSU countered with three runs in the top of the third to end the afternoon for UT sophomore starter Ryan France. The Cardinals took advantage of UT two errors on one play to cut the deficit to 5-4.
In the fourth, Toledo put the game away with four more runs on three hits and the aid of a costly BSU error to make the score 9-4. The big hit in the inning was a two-run double by Scott Boley.
Ball State tried mightily to stay close and plated two runs in top of the fifth to make it a three-run contest, 9-6, but would get no closer. Tyler Rogers and pinch hitter Ryan Chenowith registered RBI's off Greg Gompf.
The scoring would subside for the next two innings, before Rockets added an insurance run in the seventh on a RBI groundout by Hoisington to make the final score 10-6.
The Rockets return to action on Tuesday, May 8 when they host IPFW in non-conference action. The first pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. at Scott Park.
