Final Stats
DETROIT, MI - University of Detroit's Jaclyn Thomas' first goal of the season in the 56th minute was enough for the Titan women's soccer team to notch a 1-0 victory over Toledo on Friday afternoon at Titan Field. With the victory, Detroit improves to 1-3-0 on the season, while the loss drops the Rockets to 1-3-1.
Detroit posted the game's first shot on net in the 39th minute when Shelley Marick controlled a Rachel Stesney corner kick and put her shot in on senior netminder Jen Whipple. Mary Parker had the Titans' next chance to find the net, sending her shot in the 41st minute high. The half ended with the two sides deadlocked at 0-0.
Coming out of the intermission, UT had the first shot of the stanza, when senior Ashley Gerwin tested UDM goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry with a hard shot to the center of the net, but the Titans keeper made the stop to keep the match scoreless.
Thomas then took passes from Parker and Alex Moraca and beat Whipple to her left after the Rockets' co-captain came off her line for the game's only score.
Fortenberry was only tested once more in the match, thwarting UT junior Suzi Siwinski's shot as time ran out to post her first shutout of the season.
Detroit outshot Toledo, 12-10, and held a 5-3 lead in shots on goal.
Siwinski led the way for the Rockets with two shots on goal, while Whipple made two saves.
Toledo returns to action on Sunday, as the Midnight Blue and Gold travel to No. 27 St. Louis for a noon (CT) match with the Billikens at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
