Toledo (7-20, 4-10 MAC) suffered a 3-0 (30-23, 30-17, 30-27) setback this afternoon at the hands of Ball State (9-17, 6-8 MAC). The Rockets attempted to rally from 2-0 deficit but fell just short in the third game.
Junior Sarah Kreher led UT's offense with 10 kills and a .269 attack percentage and was the only Rocket to reach double figures in kills. Freshman Ashley Rucki led Toledo's defense with 17 digs.
Senior Kelly Cochran topped a balanced Cardinal attack with 12 kills along with a .367 hitting mark with freshman Julie Breivogel notching 11 kills. Senior Amanda McCormick collected a match-high 31 digs, and senior Kirby Gibson added a match-high seven blocks.
Ball State took control early in the first game by taking a 9-3 lead and the closest the Rockets could the rest of the game was within five points. UT was limited to a .070 ATK% in the game, while BSU registered a .310 hitting mark. Breivogel and Cochran led the Cardinals with four kills apiece, while Kreher and freshman Liz Sundburg led UT with three kills.
Toledo turned things around at the start of the second game by scoring the first two points. Ball State took control of the game though by scoring six straight points to take a 13-7 lead and prevented the Rockets from closing the gap by maintaining at least a five-point cushion. Breivogel again led the way for the Cardinals with four kills, while Emi Holsclaw notched three kills for UT.
Ball State held the lead for the entire third game but the Rockets climbed within a point at 23-22 following a Kreher kill. The Cardinals then regained a three-point advantage and the closest UT could come the rest of the way was within two points. Junior TaNeisha Winters led Toledo with six kills in the game with Kreher adding five kills and a .556 hitting mark. Cochran paced BSU's attack with five kills.
The Rockets will close out their 2006 Mid-American Conference campaign next weekend with a pair of home matches vs. Central Michigan on Friday, Nov. 10 and Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 11.
