Final Stats
BOWLING GREEN, OH - Toledo (14-33, 4-13 MAC) dropped a 16-2 decision to arch-rival Bowling Green (29-14, 9-7 MAC) on Friday afternoon in Mid-American Conference action at Warren Steller Field.
The Rockets were victomized by BGSU's Nolan Reimold, who was responsible for half of his team's offense, tying a school record with eight RBI.
Reimold put BGSU on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run to right-center.
The Falcons then plated five runs in both the second and third frames for a 12-0 lead to chase UT senior starter Nick Szczur. Kevin Longstreth, Eric Lawson, and Josh Stewart had RBI-hits, Reimold walked with the bases loaded, and Kurt Wells hit a sacrifice fly for a 7-0 Falcon lead. In the third, BGSU's Andy Hudak received a bases-loaded walk, before Reimold hit a grand slam to establish a double-digit deficit for UT.
Toledo got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run by pinch-hitting junior Travis Pilewski and a RBI-single by sophomore RF Joel Visser. Unfortunately for the Midnight Blue and Gold, the two runs would be the only scoring they would muster.
BGSU resumed its scoring barrage in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs to again build a 12-run cushion. They finished off their scoring in the seventh when Reimold hit what looked to be a groundout to UT freshman SS Brian Sanders, but his throw was high to Pilewski at first base and sailed into the Falcons' dugout, allowing two runners to cross home plate and giving Reimold his eighth RBI of the game.
Despite the lopsided score, the Rockets were only out-hit 13-11, but left 10 runners stranded on base.
Nick Szczur (5-6) took the loss, allowing 12 runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings of work. Today was the shortest start of the season for the Toledo native. His previous shortest outing was four innings at Kentucky back on Mar. 6.
Pilewski (2-for-3, RBI, run scored), Visser (2-for-5, RBI) and freshman C Sean Boley (2-for-3, 2 doubles) paced UT's offense with multi-hit contests.
Falcon starter Alan Brech (7-1) went six innings to earn the win, allowing two runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. Nick Cantrell pitched the final three frames to pick up his first save of the season.
The two teams meet again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Steller Field. The contest will be broadcast live on BCSN.
